MP4 and MOV video metadata checker

MP4 and MOV containers can store creation dates, author details, location tags, chapter descriptions and multiple media streams. This tool inspects supported self-contained containers in your browser. Metadata cleanup creates a separate file and compares reopened compressed packet hashes, stream properties and rotation before offering a download. Speech, visible frames, subtitles, telemetry and metadata inside codec payloads remain uninspected. Videos allow up to 100 MB, five minutes and 4K; the batch total remains 100 MB. Protected media cannot be cleaned, and fragmented layouts are inspection-only. The first media check loads about 32 MB of application code from this site.

How to use this tool

  1. Choose a supported MP4 or MOV file from your device.
  2. Review descriptive tags, detected location values and any extra streams.
  3. Choose Remove movie metadata when cleanup is available.
  4. Download the verified copy, play it, and review the frames and audio before sharing.

A fictional before-and-after example

Before: A fictional clip contains an artist tag and a geographic location tag.

After: The supported tags are absent from the verified copy; compressed audio/video packets match.

Illustrative example, not your file. Private speech, visible content and retained data streams can still reveal information.

A FEW USEFUL ANSWERS

Before you check.

Why does my recording have an MP4 filename but fail the format check?

Some recorders save WebM bytes under a .mp4 filename. Changing the filename does not convert the container or codecs. Export or convert it to a supported MP4/MOV file, then check the new copy. This checker does not perform video conversion.

Does a clean copy mean my file is safe?

No. We remove only supported metadata and list what remains. Visible content and other unsupported information may still reveal private details.

Which files can I check?

JPG, JPEG, PNG, static WebP and supported HEIC photos; PDFs; DOCX, XLSX and PPTX Office files; and supported MP4/MOV videos. The screenshot editor accepts JPG, PNG and static WebP. Batches allow up to 10 files and 100 MB total. See Supported formats for each tool’s limits.
